The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in KwaZulu-Natal has partnered with NGOs to sterilise dogs and cats to control the spread of rabies in the province. The programme started at Chatsworth in Durban.
Provincial MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Supa Zuma says, “It’s a proactive programme and we are having a campaign to eradicate rabies in the province. We are urging everyone who have dogs or cats or both to sterilise their pets. In some parts of the province, some dogs are not managed properly and the risk of them getting rabies becomes much higher. Community members Shashika Govender and Denzil Moodley applauded the programme.
“I brought my dog here as I couldn’t afford to send him to a private vet and there are very caring. I want to make sure that they don’t become aggressive and are kept away from mixing with other dogs.
“I feel happy about this and I don’t want to take a risk, nothing. I am sure it will be safe and cool down.
